? DANIEL
-
father of THOMAS DANIEL
-
Many documents, from the time of Elizabeth 1 onwards, record the ancestry of Thomas Daniel, lord of Rathwire. Unfortunately they give
different versions of this ancestry. They all say that his parents came from the Cheshire family of Daniels or Danyells, but they do not
agree which branch of the family - Daresbury, Over Tabley or Cherry Tree Hurst. Their disagreements probably arise because they confused this
Thomas Daniel (who died in or before 1482) with Thomas Daniel of Over Tabley, and with Thomas Daniel of Cherry Tree Hurst (who died in 1493).
Other documents confused him with Thomas Daniel of Walsoken in Norfolk (who died in 1474). The only contemporary references to his parentage
says that he was son of William Daniel of Daresbury. However this reference might be to another Thomas Daniel. Furthermore, even if it
referred to the correct Thomas Daniel, we know that he was such a notorious liar that he might have fabricated his parentage. We know: the following about the parentage, siblings and nephews and nieces of Thomas Danyell.
-
Thomas Daniel definitely had a sister, Elizabeth Daniel, who married Richard Torbock and was ancestress of later members of that family
-
a Thomas Daniel of London and Norfolk, son of William Daniel of Daresbury, was pardoned in 1472
-
John, son of Edmund, son of Thomas, was, in 1519, executor of the will of John Daniel of Felsted and was referred to as the testator's
cousin - the other executors were Dortons?? Knightley and William Knightley who were referred to as the testator's nephews - a William
Knightley was an attorney in Norwich, father in law of Sir Edward Coke, and given in modern documents as grandson of a Margaret Daniel of
Daresbury - John Daniel of Felsted left a daughter Mary who married John Newport of Pelham - he was a senior retainer of the Earl of
Oxford - he was, in 1513, executor of Sir John de Vere
-
Edmund, son of Thomas, was overseer of the will of Henry Daniel of Appleton Norfolk - the way that this will is worded makes it unlikely
that Edmund was Henry's brother but quite possible that he was his nephew - this Henry had children Robert, James, Oliver, Henry, Johan,
Alice and Elizabeth - descendants of Robert are recorded in the Visitation of Norfolk - a Harry Daniel was a retainer of John Howard, Duke
of Norfolk, in the period 1465-8 and was clearly an adult and considerably older than Edmund - an Oliver Daniel skinner of London lent a
largish sum of money to John Howard duke of Norfolk in 1481 when Edmund Daniel was a senior retainer of the duke
-
a George Daniel, junior, witnessed the will of Edmund son of Thomas - a George Daniel held various official posts in counties near East
Anglia in the 1450s and 1460s - a George Daniel was a retainer of John Howard, Duke of Norfolk, from 1481 - there was some dispute in 1509
between Grace widow of Edmund and George Daniel junior - a George Daniel held a manor in Stoke by Clare in 1540
-
a Peter Daniel was, in 1475, ordered, in an official document, to help Thomas Daniel in his move to Ireland
-
a John Danyell was bailiff of Frodsham at about the time that Thomas held Frodsham
-
a Richard Daniel, in 1469, bought a house in Stoke Newland - a Richard Daniel was also a retainer of John Howard 1482-5
-
the DNB entry for Thomas Daniel, grandson of Thomas, says that he had cousins Henry Everard and John Daniel of Felsted - the latter
relationship is confirmed by the will of John Daniel of Felsted dated 1519
My thanks go to John Dobson and Douglas Richardson for their help in finding and trying to unravel this information. The quotes, shown below,
from original documents, elaborate these notes.

- Cheshire Pedigrees, Harleian 1613, at Society of Genealogists gives following descent - Thomas Daniel, Lord Baron of Rathwire in Ireland
married Joane sister of the Duke of Norfolk - he was son of George Daniell of Christichouse [Charterhouse] married Joane daughter of Arnold
then Redishe of Hay - he was son of Galdfrey Daniell of Lime - he was son of John Daniell of Lime - he was son of John Daniell - he was son
of Henry Daniell - he was fourth son of Sir John Daniell 1348 married Joan daughter of Robert Boydill of Hadley - he was son of Thomas
Daniell 1349 married Margarett daughter of Adam of Tabley - he was son of William Daniell of Bradley 1290 married Anne daughter of Leighe -
he was son of Sir Thomas Daniers 1393 married Margaret granddaughter of Edmund de Chedell - he was son of Robert Daniers - he was son of
Robert Daniers - [this descent has the merit of being detailed and different from other sources so may be correct - it shows Thomas Daniel as
being descended from a junior branch of the Daresbury family rather than the senior line - it would be characteristic of Thomas Daniel to
claim descent from his more important cousins].

THOMAS DANIEL
-
son of ? DANIEL
father of EDMUND DANIEL
-
Thomas Danyell appears to have been a clever, charismatic, unscrupulous rogue - his exploits are recorded widely in contemporary and modern
documents - the records are too extensive to include here so most of them are summarised on a separate page - THOMAS
-
EDMUND DANIEL
-
son of THOMAS DANIEL
father of EDMUND DANIEL
, JOHN DANIEL
, THOMAS DANIEL
, GEORGE DANIEL
, EDWARD DANIEL
, MARGARET DANIEL
, JANE DANIEL
, ELIZABETH DANIEL
and CATHERINE DANIEL
-
Many documents, from the time of Elizabeth 1 onwards, claimed this Edmund Daniel as a son of Thomas Daniel and Margaret Howard. Others said
Thomas Daniel was childless.
The case against Thomas Daniel having legitimate children is based on the fact that Thomas Danyell was granted an heriditary lordship of
Rathwire. There is as yet no particularly good counter to this arguement. Some possible counterpoints are:
-
A number of documents say the lordship of Rathwire was not a peerage and therefore not hereditary. However this arguement does not hold
as the land grant appears to be hereditary.
-
Another possibility is that Thomas Daniel mis-behaved (yet again) and had the lordship taken away from him.
-
His son Edmund was on the wrong side at Bosworth so would then have lost any lordship, but that does not help as the lordship was given
in 1482 to Thomas Fitzgerald after the death of Thomas Daniel and before Bosworth.
-
the lordship may have been exchanged for something else - it is clear from the 1482 document that the king wanted to return the lordship
to its previous owner
-
Thomas Daniel could have had an elder son who lost the lordship for some mis-behaviour.
Although it is not possible to satisfactorily counter the arguement against Thomas Daniel having children, it is possible to provide a very
strong case for him having a child Edmund and for this child being by Margaret Howard
-
a number of contemporary documents refer to Edmund son of Thomas Daniel, lord of Rathwire
-
a number of contemporary documents refer to the marriage of Thomas Daniel and Margaret Howard
-
John Howard, Duke of Norfolk, refers in his household books to his nephew Danyel - this is probably essential evidence
-
Edmund Daniel and a "little" Edmund are referred to frequently in the household books and are often mentioned immediately after the duke's
children and with other nephews
-
Edmund Daniel was executor of the will of the duke's widow - he would probably have joined the duke's household as a child at about the
time of the duke's second marriage and so became close to this new and young wife
-
after Bosworth Edmund went with the duke's womenfolk under the protection of the Earl of Oxford
-
John Daniel, a cousin (or just possibly nephew) of Edmund, was a senior member of the Earl of Oxford's household
-
the Venerable Arthur Bell (great great great grandson of Edmund), in 1638, documented his family tree and recorded his royal descent via
Margaret Howard
Margaret Daniel nee Howard is not mentioned in the household books so presumably had died before 1462. There is no reason to think there
were children of Thomas Daniel or Margaret Howard other than Edmund. Original documents that confirm all of the above points are quoted
below.

- 1476 Thomas Danyell - Baron of Rathweir. By letters patent dated 18/6/1476 the same King recites, that on the 5/8 then last past, for the
good and laudable services which his beloved Thomas Daniel, Knight, Lord and Baron of Rathwire, with great labour and expense rendered him in
England and Ireland, he had granted the same Thomas, as "Thomas Daniel, Esquire," by letters patent, the lordships or manors of Salmon Leap,
Chapelizod, Ardmulgan, Rathwire, Belgard, Foure and Castle Ricard, with all knights' fees, advowsons of churches, wardships, marriages,
reliefs, escheats, etc to the same belonging, and which had come to the Crown by an act of resumption: to hold to the said Thomas and the
heirs male of his body by fealty only. But that now the said Thomas having surrendered the said patent so as to get the same regranted to
him in the following form, his Majesty therefore hereby gives and grants to the aforesaid "Thomas Danyell, Knight, Lord and Baron of Rathwire,"
all the aforesaid lordships, which are again set forth in nearly similar words: to hold to him and the heirs male of his body by fealty
only. - Those very ample possessions contained in this grant were for the most part afterwards resumed by another statute of
resumption, and the lordship of Rathwire again vested in the family of Darcy, whose members had enjoyed it from the reign of Edward the
Second. This circumstance may account for the descendants of Sir Thomas Daniel not being found afterwards in the Parliamentary lists. see

he was master Danyell referred to in the 1980s though clearly not the master Danyell of the 1460s] -
see CRAWFORDB/2/247-8.

-
- 1482 The Manor of Messing Barnard appears to have been granted by Richard de Reimes, to Roger de Mesing, with his daughter Amicia in
marriage, but Roger was heir of Anketil de Messing, who had also held lands in Messing. Roger de Messing had a daughter, wife of Thomas
Bainard, whence the Manor came to the Baynard family. Richard Baynard, dying 1473, left a daughter and heiress Grace, wife of Edmund
Danyell. The Manor passed to the Danyell family, the last of whom, John Daniell, sold it with the other Manors in 1582 to Thomas Diggs, who

Norfolk in 1483 - he and his wives were buried at Stoke Nayland - note that Edmund Danyell would have been an adult before his presumed uncle
John Howard became a peer so at his birth there would not have been a large social gulf between the Danyells and Howards - the Howards were
attainted in 1485 and remained out of favour until after 1498.

Richard Merton, Edward Danyell, Thomas Ligate, Thomas Smerte, clerk and John Cordall. The manor was sold to Thomas Daniel third son of
Edmund Daniel by Grace daughter and heir of Sir Richard Baynard knight of Messing in Essex which Edmund was son of Sir Thomas Daniell knight

Norfolk. Thomas Daniell the purchaser married firstly Anne daughter of Sir Edmund Lucy, and secondly Frances daughter of John Butler of
Coventry, widow of Edward Felton of Oentlow in Essex .... - see Acton in COPINGER.
-
- 1542 Felton family - of this manor it is said that William Felton of Coddenham and Elizabeth his wife died seized of the manor 23/12/1495
but the inquisition on which no doubt the statement is based does not justify one in assuming Palmers to be a manor. The inquisition finds
that William Felton died seized of a tenement called Palmers in Kedington worth £3 held of William Berneston in socage by the service of 4s
also that Edmund Felton aged 32 was his son and heir - Inquisition Post Mortem 10th of Henry 7 page 1014 - William Felton had married Anne
daughter and heir of Ralph Bancke and the so called manor or tenement passed to William's son Edmund Felton. He married firstly Anne daughter
of John Borough (Broughton?) and secondly to Anne daughter of Sir Thomas Lucy [actually Sir Edmund Lucy] and resided at Glemsford. He died
in 1519 when the manor passed to his son Edmund Felton, who married Frances, daughter of Francis Butler the Recorder of Coventry and died
10/12/1542 when the manor vested in his son George Felton who married Margaret daughter of John Carew of Bury. From George Felton the manor
appears to have been acquired by John Spring of Hitcham for by his will dated 8/6/1544 he devises the manor by name to his executors for
11 years - Palmers Manor - see COPINGER/V/261 - see IQPM/Henry-7/1014.
