- 1856 Mrs Cryer: obituary of Christopher Dove mentions niece, the late Mrs Cryer, devoted herself to Missionary enterprises in India - information from John Weston Burton - the Rev Henry Rickatson Burton (husband of Jane Dove daughter of Christopher Dove) had an uncle Robert Burton born 1783 in Egglescliffe, Durham. On April 25 1809 he married Margaret Dunn in St Cuthberts, Darlington. The church record of his marriage says "The said Robert Burton of this parish, Cordwainer, and Margaret Dunn of this parish, spinster, were married in this church by banns this 25th of April in the year of our Lord 1809 by me James Topham - Sub Curate. Witnesses Henry Smith, Mary Dunn, John Burton, Mary Burton. Subsequent to this there are numerous references to Robert, a local preacher, in the Darlington Methodist Circuit Records as well as to Christopher Dove, who was a Trustee. Sometime about 1828, Robert Burton like Christopher Dove moved to Leeds and in a later trade directory he is referred to as a Currier. Mrs Cryer (mentioned in obituary of Christopher Dove) was in fact Mary Burton, eldest daughter of Robert Burton and Margaret Dunn, and she married the Rev Thomas Cryer a Wesleyan Minister on the 3rd of February 1842 in Oxford Place Chapel, Leeds. Looking at the marriage certificate in front of me I see that one of the witnesses was Christopher Dove, who I suspect may have given her away as her father had died by then. Incidentally the other witness was quite clearly shown as John Newsom Brigg who seems to have question marks after his middle name on your site. Unfortunately, Mary Cryer, her immediate younger sister Margaret and her husband Thomas all died in India at a relatively young age. They left an orphan Elizabeth who was brought back to England by church members and subsequently reappeared as the wife of a photographer in Saltburn. From all this I presume that Robert Burton's wife, Margaret, and Christopher Dove's wife, Mary must have been sisters and hence the reference to Mary Cryer as a niece. Further references to the Dove family at www.durhampast.net click on Darlinton texts and then the Leather Industry. The Durham Records Office site under its search facility has quite a lot of references to Christopher Dove. In the main these are references to deeds that also refer to other relatives such as Thomas Pickering Pick. Also a search under Dove finds many more of the family.
